Outline of AICP Examination Subject Matter The AICP Comprehensive Planning Written Examination consists of 150 multiple choice questions in two main areas: Knowledge (40 percent) and Skills (60 percent). The items listed below under each of the major areas are intended to be representative and not inclusive of all subject matter known to the planning profession. Candidates should note that exam questions do not precisely follow the order listed below. Questions are randomly distributed in the examination to provide an even distribution of questions with respect to degrees of difficulty relative to an individual candidates education and experience. Recently, an email solicitation was sent to a number of APA and AICP leaders which sought to promote a new certification for planners.

Neither APA nor its professional institute AICP have been involved in any certifications developed by outside entities. Neither APA nor its professional institute are in any way affiliated with any certification except AICP.

No other certification can imply a relationship with APA or AICP; and in any instance where such a relationship is implied, all parties will be notified by formal letter of our intention to protect our own certification and all our legal rights.

This is the only statement that should be posted on websites, listserves, or other communications devices of APA or its components, including Chapters and Divisions. No characterizations of other certifications should be made by APA or any of its components.

The CCAPA Policy and Legislation Program is a comprehensive strategy to influence public policy as it relates to planning issues. The program is overseen by the CCAPA Vice President for Policy and Legislation and administered by the CCAPA’s Lobbying firm, Stefan/George Associates. The purpose of the program is to monitor and influence the drafting of planning legislation and regulations in the State of California, to inform the planning community of the impacts of new planning legislation and regulations, to actively participate in APA’s National Policy and Legislative Programs, and to monitor and participate in important court cases related to planning issues through filing “friends of the court” briefs. Committee Member Duties When legislation is introduced in the beginning of the year, the CCAPA Vice President of Policy & Legislation and Lobbyist review the bills related to planning and determine which bills need to have further study from the Legislative Review Committee. A list of bills is e-mailed to the Committee in the week prior to the Team meetings. As evidenced by the narrow defeat of Proposition 90 last fall, the approval of eminent domain laws and the increasing occurrence of land use ballot measures across the nation, it is clearer than ever that planners must be able to help the public understand the value of good planning. In order to address this and other issues, the National APA and California Chapter APA are launching some exciting new projects to raise the visibility of planners. First, National APA will be completing its implementation of a new communications and branding strategy. This strategy began in 2004 and has already produced the Planners Communication Guide, communications and media training workshops, and an expanded federal policy and legislation program.
