Public agencies, developers, and CEQA practitioners express concerns that the “Fair Argument” in CEQA can result in expensive studies that may not be necessary or reasonable. The Sacramento Valley Section of the American Planning Association, California Chapter is pleased to announce an upcoming AICP exam preparation workshop to help members and non-members prepare for the spring 2012 AICP exam. This workshop can be a crucial component of your exam preparation strategy. If you are planning on taking the AICP exam this year or considering AICP certification at some future point in your career, we encourage you to register for this workshop.

Again this year, Mr. David Storer, AICP will facilitate the exam preparation workshop. Mr. Storer has conducted exam workshops since 1993. Mr. Storer’s background includes being former CA State Professional Development Officer, Sacramento Valley Section Professional Development Officer; served on the AICP exam scoring committee and has taught at both national and local APA conferences and author of the Chapter Presidents Council Manual since 2003.

The Workshop Session: The three hour workshop will concentrate on the structure and makeup of the exam, explore and discuss major topic areas, and reinforce subject matter with a number of sample questions. The workshop will also focus on exam strategies, provide sample exams, discuss ethics and provide resources and documents associated with the exam. Handouts will be available at the workshop.

The ultimate goal of the workshop is to provide a thorough overview of the exam and its major topic areas, to make candidates aware of the format and difficulty of test questions, and to provide strong, focused direction for individual preparation and group study.

This is the second of three FREE APA California–Northern planning commissioner workshops that will be offered from February to May 2012. These trainings are geared to local government planning commissioners, elected officials, professional planners, and/or interested parties in Northern California. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Bay Area Planning Directors Association (BAPDA).

Workshop Topics: Land use legal principles and key cases; Basic CEQA and environmental review; defensible findings and project conditions; and development project case studies.
