The Legacy of Livable Streets 

 

Donald Appleyard’s seminal 1981 book Livable Streets revealed the detrimental effects of automobile traffic on street life and communities. How has this influential book affected city planning and transport policies since then? In this talk, hear about contemporary evidence of automobile impacts and best practices from places where livable streets have become a priority. With Bruce Appleyard, who is working on the second edition to his father’s book and Joshua Hart, who will discuss how he replicated Appleyard’s study for the first time in Europe.

Biography

Bruce Appleyard, Senior Planner with Dowling Associates, has followed in his father’s footsteps as a planning commissioner, urban designer, and transportation and land use advisor. Bruce is pursuing his Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley and is authoring the Second Edition of Livable Streets, to be published through Routledge Press.

 

Joshua Hart has a BA from UC Santa Cruz and worked for the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition from 2000 to 2005. He completed his Transport Planning MSc at UWE Bristol in 2008. His dissertation, Driven to Excess: Impacts of Motor Vehicle Traffic on Qualityof Life in Bristol UK, replicated the famous Appleyard study and was covered by over 100 media outlets worldwide.
